Stings From Scorpions

Many people throughout the world suffer from the bites or stings from insects or other small creatures.
In the USA and elsewhere the sting from a normal scorpion is not treated with much alarm as the sting from such a scorpion is relatively harmless, and will only exhibit such signs as – -
n Pain.
n Minor swelling.
n Tenderness around the area.
n A feeling of warmth at the location of the sting.
However the Bark Scorpion, which is generally found in Arizona and New Mexico in the States. Carries a much more toxic sting which can cause numbness and tingling at the affected sting site.
Young children are more likely to exhibit serious symptoms from the toxicity of the bark scorpion, which may include.
n Abnormalities in the movement of the eyes, head and neck.
n Over production by the salivary glands.
n Increases sweating.
n Feelings if restlessness and uneasiness
n If either muscle twitching, blurred vision, or spasmodic eye movement is experienced, then the person should be taken to the nearest emergency room..
Some Treatments for Scorpion Stings.
n Wash the area with warm soapy water immediately.
n Apply a cold compress, and repeat every 10 minutes as necessary.
n If any of the limbs have been stung, raise them above heart level.
n Check the validity of the persons Tetanus shot
n If in doubt, it is wise to contact a local Poison Control Centre
n Application of an ointment containing anti histamine or corticosteroid can be beneficial.
Tips for Avoidance of Scorpion Stings.
n If you are an outdoor person, camping and trekking, make sure you check your clothes and sleeping bag for any ‘strange’ visitors .Carry an insect repellant and anti histamine ointment
n If you suspect there may be scorpions in the house, consult a pest exterminator
In areas of the world where scorpion stings can be poisonous, the symptoms are treated with alpha adrenergic blockers and sometimes antivenins to alleviate the effects of the scorpion sting..
Take comfort from the fact that in western countries, there are virtually no fatalities from normal scorpion stings, even from the more toxic bark scorpion variety.
